Music and Worship

Tomoka United Methodist Church offers many opportunities for involvement in the Music and Worship Ministry of the church. We believe that all people are called to “love God with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength”; and that all Christians are admonished to “speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.”

The goal of the Music and Worship Ministry is to equip the entire congregation to worship in a way that gives honor and praise to God. That means that some people will lead from the chancel area while others offer praises from wherever they are in the sanctuary. God doesn’t care where you sit, but God is concerned with what you offer from your heart during worship!

For those individuals who are comfortable with participating in a more visible way during worship we offer several opportunities to sing or play musical instruments:

Agape Handbell Choir

The Agape Handbell Choir rehearses August through May, on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Music reading skills are crucial for this group. Previous musical experience is also very helpful.

Chancel Choir

The Chancel Choir sings weekly at the 10:30 worship service and performs a diverse selection of choral styles. Our rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., August to May. Please join us for rehearsal, fellowship, devotion, and worship! Developed musical skills are helpful, but not necessary.

Children’s Choir

Our children’s choir was recently reconstituted! They practice each week at 9:15 a.m. in the Music Room, just prior to going to Sunday School classes. They will sing periodically throughout the school year at the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

Children/Youth Handbells

This is a new group, scheduled to begin in February 2012. Please contact Joe Corporon if you are interested in joining.

Classique

Classique is a classical vocal trio, with piano or organ accompaniment, and sings periodically throughout the year. This group loves to perform works of the great classical composers.

Good News

Good News is our resident gospel ensemble, with piano and other accompaniment instruments. Good News usually sings the fourth Sunday of each month.

Melodeez

Our women’s ensemble rehearses on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., August to May. Melodeez performs a wide variety of different styles of music, and sings in worship at least once a month, as well as special services throughout the year. Membership in the Chancel Choir is encouraged.

Soloists and Ensembles

Individuals and small groups are encouraged to present vocal or instrumental offerings during both of our worship times on Sunday morning. Please contact the Music Director for more information.

If you would rather serve in a way that doesn’t involve musical performance you may consider the following:

Acolyte

Carry the light of Christ in at the beginning of worship and out at the end. Children, youth, and adults are all welcome to be acolytes in our worship services.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is responsible for decorating the sanctuary for worship, including paraments, banners, and special displays. In addition, they prepare communion each week.

Liturgist

The liturgist leads the congregation in the Call to Worship, Affirmation of Faith, and assists the pastor during the worship service, including Holy Communion.

Usher/Greeter

The Ushers and Greeters are available to welcome all people to Tomoka United Methodist Church, and are ready to assist in any way!
