Being the visible and active presence of Christ in our community

Tomoka Toddler Time

Tomoka Toddler Time began meeting on August 13, 2015. Since then have met weekly, every Thursday, to play and interact with our little ones. Tomoka Toddler Time’s goal is to encourage interaction and development for toddlers while creating space for building friendships with other moms. We support one another on the joys and challenges of motherhood. Having a toddler myself, and moving to a new city, I knew the importance of finding a group of mom friends and playmates was a priority. I also know that it takes a village to raise a child, and I prefer my village to be within a Christian setting. It turns out that I’m not the only mom that feels that way. After using social media (Facebook) to find local groups here in Ormond Beach and meet other young moms, I soon found 5 other moms who were interested in being a part of Tomoka Toddler Time.

As of today the number in our Tomoka Toddler Time Facebook group has gone from 5 to 39; pretty exciting as that happened in just the course of 3 months. Each Thursday we meet at the church for free play in the nursery, parachute games, songs, and crafts. On a typical week we have about 12 toddlers and 10 moms. That’s 22 people in our small nursery and it can get loud quick, but its always fun!

When we presented Tomoka Toddler Time to our Church Council, they were excited to move forward with it. We see it as a great way to outreach to our community and to the young families of Ormond Beach. While some of the TTT moms do have other churches they attend on Sunday, there are some who are looking for a place to belong and worship. If there is one thing that we can do as a church, it’s to pray for these young moms, their little ones, and that they may find Tomoka UMC to be a welcoming place to raise their families. I can say personally that Sunday mornings are not the easiest for a Mom and a toddler. Worship services weren’t exactly designed for 2 year olds or young children.

And it is without a doubt a challenge to get up, dressed, and out the door in order to sit in a church service hoping my little one will be behaved and quiet for an hour.

I look forward to seeing how God will connect the bridge and create a space for young families and their toddlers to worship here at Tomoka UMC. I thank you as a church family for allowing us to invite these families in each Thursday to just play in a great environment! I am so excited about some upcoming events for Tomoka Toddler Time, including a Halloween Messy Party, Pajama Time with Pastor Brian, a Thanksgiving feast, and a New Year’s Eve Noon Party!

Serving in His Name,

Melanie Johnson
