Harmony With God’s Creation

The book of Psalms is full of many themes, emotions, and praises that we may all relate to in our personal life. I learned from my Scriptures professor, Dr. Felix Struik, O.P., that Jesus used and quoted it many times throughout his ministry.

Like Jesus, we may also use Psalms to lead us in prayer through all of our experiences. One of my favorites is Psalm 19:1-4.

“Heaven is declaring God’s glory; the sky is proclaiming his handywork. One day gushes the news to the next, and one night informs another what needs to be known. Of course, there’s no speech, no words— their voices can’t be heard— but their sound extends throughout the world; their words reach the ends of the earth.”

These verses share the message that God’s message is passed through all the creation. That every being created has a mission to accomplish. That mission is to proclaim God’s message of promoting a harmonious relationship with each other to mirror the harmonious relationship that exists within the whole creation. Richard Rohr, in one of his devotional writings, published on June 10, 2018, says, “we’re exploring how the divine image and dignity is inherent in every being. We have the freedom and honor of choosing to grow (or not) in our unique likeness of this image. Jesus is one clear example of this path, a visible incarnation of the union between human and divine, matter and spirit. He models inclusive, nondual, compassionate thinking and being.”

As for me, these words are encouraging me to seek and promote a harmonious relationship with our neighbors, with our environment, and the whole universe. In this month, I want to encourage you to explore the idea to intentionally be in harmony with God’s creation.
